If you do then you know how difficult it is to maintain such a space and ensure that your home office is well-stocked. Here are some tips on how you might be able to ensure that you have everything that you need on hand.

Keep a check list

Start by making a list of all the supplies you will need each month. List everything from staple clips to print cartridges to pencils and marking tape. Allocate a quantity for each item and use that to place an order with your closest stationery store. You can and may have to restock during the month if you run out of printer paper, for instance, but the list will help you keep track of what you use.

Heavy equipment

Depending on the nature of your work, you may need to invest in some large, heavily used office equipment such as a printer or a fellowes laminator.

Before purchasing for instance, a multi function printer, you should consider how often you are likely to use it – if it will be used frequently then you will save money in the long run by buying one for your home office. A printer may also be a good addition to a home office. Ask around for recommendations or seek the advice of the store owner as to which models might best serve your purposes and if you are working from home then you may have a budget for how much to spend on a home office, in which case let them know. Also, ensure that you get a warranty or guarantee card with your purchase that will allow you to either claim a replacement or be entitled to a free service if needed.

Keep items close at hand

You may also wish to allocate a specific location for each item in your office. For instance, keep all your filing equipment – file covers, folders, binding clips etc. – in one drawer on a specific shelf. Have pencil and pen holders and place all extra items in a cupboard till needed. This will help you quickly spot what’ running out and will also help limit clutter. It is also advisable to keep items that you use regularly close at hand – for instance, a stapler, pencil sharpener and eraser – so that you do not have to hunt through drawers and make a mess while looking for them. They should be within arm’s reach. You can get some open shelving installed above your work space so that you can have these items on hand and tidy at once.
